Bedside cots, also known as bassinets and co-sleepers, are designed to allow parents to rest close to their children at night without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended up to 6 months, after which your baby will be ready to be moved to an actual bed.

Size

Height

When you are choosing a crib that is bedside make sure it can be adjusted to the ideal height for you. The CPSC found, however that these requirements were not practical or effective in reducing number of instances in which infants are trapped between a bedside rail and an adult bed.

The majority of the incidents covered in the NPR concerned multi-use bedside sleepers which can be converted into other types of equipment, like play yards or bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include a different clause to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers that are multi-use that would permit them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment. This attachment can be permanently attached or removed when the product is not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR regarding bedside sleepers. The Commission will be examining these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be released in the month of November 2021.
